Note of Caution for Windows 10 1703 users

Windows 10 version 1703 service came to end in the October of 2018 and no updates might be available to 1703 Home, Pro for Workstation, Pro and IoT Core edition users. These updates will be available only for the Education and Enterprise editions. Hence, it is suggested to update to Windows 10 latest version for better experience.

Main threat fix in this update

KB4480973 introduced a fix for the session isolation security threat which affected remote endpoints of PowerShell. “PowerShell” remoting can work only with an Admin account by default but one could configure the same to work with non-admin accounts. After this update, such working with non-administrative accounts will not be possible. If someone tried using a non-administrator account, Windows will show an error message.

Also, KB4480973 offer some security updates to various essential apps and programs on Windows 10 which includes Windows Linux, Internet Explorer, Windows App Platform and Frameworks. Furthermore, it also includes updates for Microsoft Edge, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows Kernel, Windows MSXML, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine etc.

KB4480973 Known issues

Listed below are some of the known issues with the update KB4480973.

Issue-1: – After the proper installation of the September 11, 2018, “.NET Framework update” or “August Preview of Quality Rollup”, instantiation of
“SqlConnection” can throw an exception. This issue with updates has been around for a while now. You can learn more about the issue in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

Workaround – This issue is yet to be resolved. Microsoft team is actively working on finding a solution to it.

Issue-2: Third party apps may experience troubles while authenticating hotspots after you get the update installed.

Workaround – Microsoft is working for a solution to this problem. The team believes that a solution to this issue will be updated soon, mostly in January itself.

How to download KB4480973 for Windows 10, version 1703 and install

If your device is running on 1703 Enterprise or Education edition, your device will automatically download and install the patch. In case you have all the previous updates installed and intact, one the added fixes will be downloaded. You can also download KB4480973 as the stand-alone package from the Microsoft Update Catalog site. If your system is experiencing any delay in receiving this patch, simply go to:
