The patch addresses a remote code execution (RCE) exploit in the Print Spooler service titled as PrintNightmare and listed under CVE-2021-34527. This will allow the users, specifically, who are not administrators to install only signed print drivers to a print server. By default configuration, an administrator is able to install unsigned as well as signed drivers to a print server. Furthermore, the installed root certificates in the Trusted Root Certification Authorities of the system must trust the signed drivers. The tech giant recommends that you should instantly install this update on all supported clients and server operating system, starting with devices that currently host the print server role. You can also configure the the regedit DWORD RestrictDriverInstallationToAdministrators in order to prevent non-administrators from installing signed printer drivers on a print server.
