Uninstall or disable third party antivirus

Commonly, third-party antivirus such as Avast, Avira, Malwarebytes, or other are found guilty when Copilot not working properly. The programs interfere with the opening and loading process of this new feature and because of this Copilot does not open in spite of being installed. So either disable them or remove using the following steps:

To disable:

  1. Open System tray icon from the right side of Taskbar.
  2. Right-click on the antivirus icon and select Disable.
  3. Now check if the Windows Copilot opens after clicking on its icon.
  4. If it does not then remove the program.

To uninstall:

  1. Press Windows and R and type appwiz.cpl.
  2. When the Programs & Features window appears, right-click on the antivirus.
  3. Select Uninstall.

Check if Windows Copilot is enabled or not

However, the Windows Copilot is turned on by default but for confirmation check the setting once:

  1. Click on Start and select Settings cog.
  2. Choose Personalization.
  3. Then click on Taskbar from the right panel.
  4. Make sure that Copilot preview is turned on in the Taskbar items.

Run System File Checker or SFC and DISM tools

Corrupted system files might also cause hindrances in the normal behavior of Windows Copilot. Installation components affect the feature and something wrong in these may be the cause of the issue you are facing. System File checker and DISM are the tools that can rescue these situations so run them sequentially as follows:

  1. Click on Search and type cmd.exe.
  2. Choose Run as administrator.
  3. When the elevated Command prompt appears, type SFC /SCANNOW.
  4. Press Enter and wait until the verification and repair are completed.
  5. Restart the system and check if Copilot is working well.
  6. If it is not then once more open the Command prompt as administrator.
  7. Run the following commands successively:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  1. Finally, reboot the device.

Try opening Copilot using shortcut

For checking purpose, you can use a shortcut to launch Copilot on Windows 11 or 10. This will confirm whether the feature is functional on your system:

  1. Press the Windows key and R.
  2. Copy-paste the path and hit Enter:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe" --single-argument microsoft-edge:///?ux=copilot&tcp=1&source=taskbar

Disable or Uninstall VPN Client

Running VPN service might prevent Copilot from opening or working therefore, remove the client app to solve this issue:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and find the VPN software.
  2. Click on 3 dots icon and select Uninstall.

Boot into Safe mode

Safe mode can be a reliever when encountering Copilot is not opening in Windows 11 or 10. As this environment allows to load least number of services and programs to run Windows the chances of issues minimize. Therefore, follow the steps:

  1. Click on Search and type msconfig.
  2. Once System Configuration opens, switch to the Boot tab.
  3. Select Safe boot > Network.

  3. After the system is in Safe mode try opening Copilot.
